New Member Information:

The Harvard Sportsmen’s Club welcomes new members and encourages participation in our club and the outdoor sports.
Prospective Members require sponsorship by a current HSC member.  The Sponsor is required to write letter (outlined below) and attend one of the monthly membership meetings, by invitation, with the Prospective Member where the Sponsor will introduce the Prospective Member to the club membership.

Our membership meetings are held at 6:30 pm in the clubhouse on the first Thursday of each month, except July as there typically isn’t a meeting in July. At the meeting, the applicants pick up and fill out the membership form, and submit the application with a check or cash for the applicable fee and dues. The applicants are then interviewed by the Board. Basically, the Board members ask the applicants why they wish to join the club. There is no need to complete the application ahead of time as it is simple to do.

Anyone interested in joining HSC is welcome to attend the public events that are listed on the calendar.  Activities such as Bi-Weekly Breakfasts, weekly Open Practices, and Match events are great opportunities to see the club and meet members.  If you don’t already know an HSC member who can Sponsor you, then these events are also good opportunities to make that connection.

The Monthly Meetings are followed by a mandatory safety briefing on the following Sunday at 8:30 am. This Range Safety Class is informative AND we try to make it a little fun. The Class usually runs until 10:00 (depending on how much we discuss politics).  Alternative schedules are available for folks who cannot attend on Sunday.
Each applicant must attend the Members’ meeting and Range Safety Class in order to complete the application process.

There is a fee of $150 for initiation, and the dues are $150 for the year. Student, associate and junior memberships are $15 each. September through January the dues for the current year are pro-rated. The Board will announce the cost at the meeting.
NRA membership is no longer a requirement. However, we do recommend membership in a group that supports our Second Amendment rights such as the NRA, GOAL or Comm2A.

Requirements:

Sponsor, Meeting Invitation, and Range Safety Class

Sponsorship Policy 2018:

RECOMMENDATION LETTER – Beginning with the May, 2018 monthly meeting (this affects all prospective new members presented after the April, 2018 monthly meeting),

The Sponsor must submit a letter of recommendation for each proposed new member to the  Club President. The letter may be submitted by email.

Please email: Dan Hurley, sharkbike@aol.com

The Sponsor should include the following information in the letter:
Describe how and when you met the new member,
Describe range experience WITH the new member, including experience at HSC.
Vouch for the good character and honesty of the new member.
Vouch for the good safety habits of the new member.

It is important that we remember, as responsible Sponsors, that we are vouching for the character and behavior of new members. We may be subject to disciplinary action based on violations or transgressions by Members that we have sponsored into the Club.

SPONSORS IN GOOD STANDING – Beginning at the August, 2018 monthly meeting (this affects all sponsorships after the June, 2018 meeting),

An HSC Member must have been a Member for at least one year prior to serving as a Sponsor for prospective new members.

Membership Meeting Invitation:

After receiving and approving the recommendation letter, the Board will extend a written (email) invitation to the Sponsor and the Prospective Member to appear at a Monthly Board Meeting. Prospective new members will no longer appear at a Monthly Meeting without an invitation from the Board.

The recommendation letter and the invitation will most often occur via email and therefore should not add excessive delay to the process. Letters may be submitted directly to Dan Hurley at sharkbike@aol.com. Letters submitted less than 7 days before the monthly meeting may not be processed and approved in time for that meeting and are likely to be carried to the following monthly meeting.

PROPOSED NEW MEMBERS WHO APPEAR AT A MONTHLY MEETING BEFORE RECEIVING AN INVITATION OR WITHOUT A SPONSOR WILL BE INVITED TO ATTEND THE SAFETY BRIEFING AND WILL BE ASKED TO RETURN AFTER RECEIVING AN INVITATION TO A MONTHLY MEETING.

Fees:

Adults: $150/year plus $150 initiation (after membership for one year a $75 work credit is available)
