Membership

 New Member Information:

The Harvard Sportsmen’s Club welcomes members and encourages participation in our club and the outdoor sports.

 Requirements:

Sponsor, Meeting Invitation, Meeting Attendance, and Safety Briefing

SPONSORSHIP - Prospective Members require sponsorship by a current HSC member.  The Sponsor is required to write a letter/email (outlined below) and attend one of the monthly meetings, by invitation, with the Prospective Member. The Sponsor will introduce the Prospective Member to the club membership.

MEETING INVITATION - After approval of the Sponsor's recommendation letter, the Prospective Member and the Sponsor will be invited to a monthly meeting. Our meetings are held at 6:30 pm in the clubhouse on the first Thursday of each month, except July as there typically isn’t a meeting in July. At the meeting, the Prospective Member will pick up and fill out the membership form and submit the application with a check or cash for the applicable fee and dues. The Sponsor and Prospective Member are then interviewed by the Board. There is no need to complete the application ahead of time as it is simple to do.

GAINING SPONSORSHIP - Anyone interested in joining HSC is welcome to attend the public events that are listed on the calendar. Bi-weekly practices for IDPA are open to the public and are great opportunities to see parts of the Club and meet members, possibly gaining a sponsor. Contact Kevin Connolly for more information: homesteadkevinc@gmail.com. Also, the Defensive Action program might be a path to a sponsor. The program meets every second and fourth Monday from 6-9 pm. Email info@metrowesttactical.com. Finally, volunteering to work on the Grounds Committee on Sunday mornings might be the quickest way to make friends. Contact Jason at fast_st@hotmail.com for information.

MEMBERSHIP MEETING INVITATION - After receiving and approving the recommendation letter, the Board will extend a written (email) invitation to the Sponsor and the Prospective Member to appear at a monthly meeting. Prospective Members will no longer appear at a monthly meeting without an invitation from the Board.

PROPOSED MEMBERS WHO APPEAR AT A MONTHLY MEETING BEFORE RECEIVING AN INVITATION OR WITHOUT A SPONSOR WILL BE INVITED TO ATTEND THE SAFETY BRIEFING AND WILL BE ASKED TO RETURN AFTER RECEIVING AN INVITATION TO A MONTHLY MEETING.

SAFETY BRIEFING - The required Safety Briefing is held the Sunday following the meeting at 8:00 am. Applicants meet by the clubhouse. This Safety Briefing is interesting and informative as the new members learn about the club facilities and safety protocols. The Briefing may run for an hour or more.

Each applicant must attend the members’ meeting and the Safety Briefing in order to complete the application process.

COST OF MEMBERSHIP - There is a $180 initiation fee and annual dues of $180 for a total of $360 due at the meeting.  Full-time students under 26 years of age who bring proof of enrollment may reduce their annual dues to $25.  Associate and junior memberships, which may be added to the membership application, are $25 each. After one year of membership, senior members may reduce their annual dues up to 50% of the cost by volunteering to work for the club.

From September through January, the dues for the current year are pro-rated. The Board will announce the cost at the meeting.

We recommend, but do not require, membership in a group that supports our Second Amendment rights, such as the NRA, GOAL or Comm2A.

SPONSORSHIP - SPONSORS IN GOOD STANDING – An HSC Member must have been a member for at least one year prior to serving as a Sponsor for Prospective Members.

RECOMMENDATION LETTER – The Sponsor must submit a letter of recommendation for each Prospective Member to the  Club President. The letter may be submitted by email.

Please email: President - Jason Grennell, fast_st@hotmail.com

The Sponsor should:
Describe how and when he or she met the Prospective Member,
Describe range experience WITH the Prospective Member, including experience shooting firearms at HSC. A Sponsor must confirm that he or she has spent time shooting with the applicant at the 25/50 or 100 Yard Ranges and that the applicant has experienced the HSC cease-fire procedures.
Vouch for the good character and honesty of the applicant.
Vouch for the good safety habits of the applicant.

It is important that we remember, as responsible Sponsors, that we are vouching for the character and behavior of those we sponsor.  We may be subject to disciplinary action based on violations or transgressions by Prospective Members that we have sponsored into the Club.

The recommendation letter and the invitation will most often be transmitted via email and therefore should not add excessive delay to the process. Letters may be submitted directly to Jason Grennell at fast_st@hotmail.com. Letters submitted less than 7 days before the monthly meeting may not be processed and approved in time for that meeting and are likely to be carried over to the following monthly meeting.
